Rakan Muda Should Focus on Racial Integration
Y4C would like to express its grave reservations with regard to the recently announced second phase of the Rakan Muda programme. Our concerns relate especially to the huge allocation of RM50 million to re-brand this youth-oriented programme which in the past is generally acknowledged to have failed to meet the expectations and needs of young Malaysians. This attempt at rebranding seems to be nothing more than the bottling of old ketchup in expensive new bottles.

Why we want to run this campaign?
Based on statistics compiled by the Election Commission (EC), some 70 per cent of the 4.9 million Malaysians yet to register as voters are aged between 21 and 35 years. Further, as of December 2006, some 15.2 million Malaysians had attained the age of 21 but only 10.3 million registered as voters.
This is alarming evidence of the current lack of political participation amongst young Malaysians today. There is therefore an urgent and immediate need to ensure young Malaysians are given adequate exposure and education on the election, current issues and the important role they play. Equally or more pressing is the need to get young Malaysians to register as voters, an exercise necessary for Malaysia to truly reflect the representative democracy it prides itself on.
KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH), Civil Rights Committee (CRC) and Youth For Change (Y4C), together with other joint partner organizations, are initiating a Young Voters’ Campaign themed “Empowering Youth for Political Participation 2007”.

Y4C Statement: Set up Truth and Reconciliation Commission
Press Statement - 16 May 2007 -
Letter to Editor
Set Up Truth and Reconciliation Commission!
Y4C regrets that the Internal Security Ministry confiscated ‘May 13: Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969′.
It is the responsibility of the government to allow searches for the truth of historical events rather than cracking down on the voices of the people. The Government should establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to allow the true facts regarding the May 13 incident to be made public. More importantly, all Malaysians should no longer live under the shadow of May 13, and the Commission will assist in this process.
Y4C welcomes Dr Kua Kia Soong’s book titled ‘May 13: Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969′. It provides a channel for our peoples to genuinely investigate the matters surrounding May 13 in the interests of nation-building and democratic discussion. It also serves as an important reference point for academic research.
Dr. Kua is an intellectual who has shown his social responsibility and courage to make Malaysia a better place to live in.
Y4C further states its disappointment with the three senators who requested the Government to ban the book and to take action on Dr. Kua. As senators, they should welcome free discussion on a variety of issues affecting our country with an open mind and positive attitude.
Malaysia is celebrating the 50th of Independence this year. Malaysians are sufficiently mature to discuss the 38-year “May 13 riots” incident. It is truly time that May 13 be dissected to help ethnic communities understand the truth of history, learn from the past experiences, set aside mis-perceptions and prejudices to forge a Malaysian Malaysia.

Forum in Penang : Review of Machap & Ijok By-election
The 2 by-elections in Macap and Ijok showed worrying trends eg campaigning violence, which means that the electoral process meant to benefit the citizens cannot be left in the hands of politicians alone.
The citizens watch groups need to play an increasingly more important role to ensure that elections are organized on a free and fair basis.
Therefore, Y4C and Malvu will organize a talk on the review of Machap & Ijok By-election this Saturday (12 May 2007), 8.00pm at Democratic Space, Penang.
This talk will presents you ideas on:
-how to be effective election watchers
-how to exercise citizens rights in the election process.
